About Banks Island Migratory Bird Sanctuary

Located on the southwestern coast of Banks Island in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, the Banks Island Migratory Bird Sanctuary (MBS) protects a vast and ecologically significant region characterized by coastal tundra, wetlands, and shoreline habitats. Established in 1961, the sanctuary spans parts of Banks Island, one of the largest islands in the Arctic Archipelago, and serves as a critical breeding and staging area for numerous migratory bird species including the endangered Lesser Snow Goose, Brant Goose, and various species of shorebirds and waterfowl. The sanctuary’s landscape is largely shaped by its Arctic location, featuring permafrost, coastal cliffs, and extensive lowland tundra which support diverse avian populations during the brief Arctic summer. The sanctuary is remote and largely inaccessible by road, contributing to its pristine condition and undisturbed wildlife habitats. Outdoor activities in this sanctuary are limited due to its protected status and emphasis on wildlife conservation; however, researchers and specialized expeditions often visit to study Arctic bird populations and the effects of climate change on migratory patterns. Notable landmarks include the prominent nesting sites and feeding areas along the island’s southern coast. The sanctuary is recognized internationally for its importance under the Ramsar Convention and acts as an essential hub for migratory birds traveling along the Pacific and Arctic flyways. Its appeal to visitors is primarily focused on scientific research and the opportunity to witness rare Arctic bird species in their natural habitats.
